How to Use the CD-ROM

Browser software in executable form for the Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX platforms is included on this disc for viewing the electronic conference proceedings.

If you already have a World Wide Web browser on your computer, you do not need to install the software included here. Open your WWW browser, and choose the option for "Local File" under the File menu. Select the file SC96MAIN.HTM in the top level directory (main folder) of the CD to begin reading the electronic proceedings.

Note: To print a paper click on the 'PostScript' button at the top of the paper.

How to Navigate this CD-ROM:

The Supercomputing'96 electronic proceedings has been developed using the Hypertext Markup Language commonly called HTML. Individual papers are formatted with the HTML tagging structure. Technical Papers are indexed via hypertext links by author, title, sessions and keyword. A postscript version of each technical paper is included for ease of printing.

Netscape Navigator 3.0 is provided to view the documents and to follow the links between them. Click on the highlighted hypermedia links that appear in the HTML documents to navigate through the proceedings. Links are highlighted in color if you have a color monitor; links that have already been selected appear in a different highlight color. For more information, see the Help menu in Netscape.

Note: If you have an active connection to the Internet, you will be able to follow outside URLs from the links and directly use email addresses.

Installing the Software

The folders MAC, WINDOWS, and UNIX at the top level of the CD-ROM contain the browser software, Netscape Navigator 3.0 for each of the respective platforms. Information for configuring the browser and helper software is given below.

AIX, BSD/386, HP-UX, IRIX, Linux, OSF-1, Sun OS 4.1.3, SPARC Solaris 2.3, SPARC Solaris 2.4

If your UNIX platform is not listed above, you will need to download a suitable browser and you may have to compile it for your system. Netscape Navigator browser software may be obtained at the URL: http://home.netscape.com/ .

INSTALLING THE BROWSER SOFTWARE

Executable binary files for the above platforms are contained in the respective directories MAC, WINDOWS and UNIX.

UNIX

For Unix, copy the netscape and mpeg_play files appropriate for your system. For example, a system running Sun OS, copy SUNOS_54/NETSCAPE.TAR, MPEG_PLA, and MPEG_PLA.1. Follow the Configuration Notes in the README that is included in NETSCAPE.TAR. In particular read the section on Java Applet Support in order to run the applets related to these proceedings.

MACINTOSH

For Macintosh, drag the folder MAC from the CD-ROM onto your hard disc. Use Binhex 4.0 to decode the file NETSCAPE.HQX. Then double click on the self-extracting archive netscape.sea, open the folder named netscape and launch the application by double clicking on the netscape icon.

Note that Sparkle 2.45 is included in the MAC folder and is used to view images and animations. SPARKLE.HQX is decoded the same way as above.

WINDOWS

For Windows open the directory (folder) WINDOWS at the top level of the CD-ROM and copy the folder appropriate for your system, Windows32, WindowsNT or Windows95, onto your hard disc.

To install InterVU under Windows NT/95, click on the IVSETUP1.EXE icon to self-extract the software. For Windows 32 and additional instructions and information on InterVU go to http://www.intervu.com .

Start netscape by clicking on the netscape icon.
