CONFERENCE PROGRAM
OVERVIEW

TUTORIALS
The tutorials program will kick off SC'96 with full-day courses on Sunday and Monday. Particular emphasis has been placed on topics relating to parallel programming, web technologies and emerging applications for high performance systems. Click here for descriptions of tutorials.

KEYNOTE
The keynote address will be presented by Dr. Fran Allen, IBM Fellow, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center.

TECHNICAL PROGRAM
The SC '96 Technical Program, which will be showcased Tuesday through Thursday, November 19-21, includes both plenary sessions and parallel sessions. The parallel sessions have been structured to ensure that something of interest to you will always be available during these times. There will be four parallel tracks of activities on these days; these tracks divide into two basic components of the program design as follows:

  1. Two parallel tracks will contain the presentations by authors of contributed technical papers. Each of these papers has been through strong competition within a rigorous peer review process; only the best were scheduled for SC '96. There will be 50 contributed technical papers presented this year.

  2. Two additional parallel tracks have been targeted for general interest in many relevant current topics. Sessions will include interesting talks by invited speakers, as well as panels and roundtables. These participants are well known in their fields, and we believe you will learn a great deal from their work, views and perspectives.

EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Education Program extends the conference theme Computers at Work to Computers at Work in the Classroom to focus on presenting successful classroom applications of computing and communications technologies, especially in science and mathematics. Sessions for teachers will be presented Sunday through Tuesday, November 17-19. Teachers may also attend industry and research exhibits, technical and poster sessions, the conference keynote address and plenary sessions.

AWARDS SESSION
This year's award session will be in two parts. The first session, Thursday, 10:00 a. m. to Noon, will include a presentation by the winner of the Sid Fernbach Award, followed by presentations by the finalists of the Gordon Bell Award. Then, from 1:30-3:00 p.m., the winners of the Best Student Paper Award, the Sid Fernbach Award, the Gordon Bell Award and the High Performance Computing Challenge will be presented in a plenary session. This session will also include an invited talk by Erich Bloch.

RESEARCH EXHIBIT
Conference participants can see working demonstrations of research projects by visiting the Research Exhibit on the main exhibit floor. These exhibits are, in general, highly interactive, and participants will be able to discuss the projects with their developers one-on-one. As part of the full conference exhibit display, the Research Exhibits will be open during all exhibition hours, including the Open House Reception on Monday evening, November 18, 7-9 p.m. The location and a description of each of the research exhibits will be included in the Final Program.

POSTER EXHIBIT
Poster exhibits enable SC'96 participants to see and discuss late-breaking results with the authors. The posters will be on display in the Exhibit Hall throughout the day on Tuesday and Wednesday. A poster reception with the authors is scheduled for Wednesday, November 20, from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the foyer of the Doubletree Hotel. Abstracts for the posters will appear in the Final Program.

INDUSTRY EXHIBIT
SC'96 complements the technical program with exhibits featuring leaders of the industry in high-performance computing and associated software, visualization tools and services. The Exhibit Hall will be open to attendees Tuesday, November 19 through Thursday, November 21. Click here for current list of exhibitors.

EXHIBITOR FORUM
This forum is an opportunity for exhibitors to give non-commercial presentations on new techniques, research, applications and services to interested attendees. Click here for the list of scheduled presentations. The complete schedule will be provided in the SC'96 Final Program.

BIRDS-OF-A-FEATHER
Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF) sessions are informal meetings at which SC'96 attendees can discuss topics of mutual interest. Meeting rooms will be provided, and a BOF notice board will publicize the BOF schedule. Requests for BOF sessions should include: title of group, contact person and address, expected number of participants and list of presentation equipment required (e.g., overhead projector, 35mm slide projector). To request a BOF session, send e-mail to bof96@mail.supercomp.org.

HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING CHALLENGE
This challenge presents a wide range of real-world applications that achieve the highest possible computation rates. At SC'96 the race will continue to achieve teraflops performance. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded.

SCINET '96
SCinet, the on-site network designed and built especially for the SUPERCOMPUTING conferences, vividly demonstrates the role that high performance computing and communications technology have played and will continue to play in the development of what we commonly refer to as the information superhighway. SC'96 is building on networking activities of previous conferences, providing many venues and opportunities for attendees to participate and view communications technology "at work" on many platforms and applications.

Social Events
Social activities for SC'96 will begin with an Open House Reception on Monday, Nov. 18, on the exhibition floor. Attendees will be able to meet exhibitors in a social setting and preview recent hardware/software developments in high-performance computing and communication. A Conference Reception on Thursday, November 21 at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Science Center will provide another opportunity for conference participants to interact and socialize.
