SC2004 News - June Edition
Welcome to the June edition of
SC2004 News, the official
newsletter of the SC conference series. The newsletter is intended to
give you
brief, useful, and up-to-date information about SC2004.
SC2004, Bridging Communities,
will be held November 6 - 12
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
*** Research Exhibits Selection
Process Started ***
Research
exhibit booth selection has begun. Booth contacts
will receive an individual email to select a booth. Please include your
200-word
abstract when you make your booth selection.
*** Hotel Registration Opens July 12 ***
Reservation and
rate information on conference hotels will be
available on July 12. There is no shortage of good quality and good
value hotels
in Pittsburgh, and several
are
within walking distance of the David
L. Lawrence
Convention Center.
Look for details at www.sc-conference.org/sc2004/hotel.html,
where some hotel information is already posted.
*** Conference Registration
Opens July 22 ***
Mark the date. Thursday, July 22, 2004, is
the opening of SC2004 conference registration.
Remember to register early to take advantage of any discounts. Visit
the website
at www.sc-conference.org/sc2004/registration.html
for
details as
they become available.
*** Annual High Performance
Bandwidth Challenge Seeks
Teams***
The High
Performance Bandwidth Challenge, an annual
competition for leading-edge network applications developed by teams of
researchers from around the world, provides a showcase for the
technologies and
people who provide the networking capabilities crucial to
supercomputing. The
bandwidth challenge, running across SCinet, is designed to test the
limits of
network capabilities, and past events have showcased multi-gigabit per
second
demonstrations never before thought possible. The SC2004 challenge will
push
this envelope even farther. As always, the competition will take place
on the
conference exhibit floor.
Teams can sign
up for the bandwidth challenge at the
submissions website www.sc-submissions.org. Submissions
are due
Sept. 1, but letters of intent to participate are due July 18. For
questions,
send email to bandwidth04@sc-conference.org.
*** Nominations
Being Accepted For Seymour
Cray & Sidney Fernbach Awards ***
Nominations are
being sought for the Seymour Cray Computer
Engineering Award and the Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award. These
awards,
sponsored by IEEE Computer Society, will be presented during the awards
ceremony at SC2004 in Pittsburgh.
--The Seymour
Cray Computer Engineering Award is given to
individuals whose innovative contributions to high performance
computing systems
best exemplify the creative spirit demonstrated by Seymour Cray. The
award
consists of a certificate, a crystal model, and a $10,000 honorarium.
The
nomination form and submission information is available on the IEEE
awards website
at www.computer.org/awards.
--The Sidney
Fernbach Memorial Award was established in 1992
in memory of Sidney Fernbach, one of the pioneers in the development
and
application of high performance computers for the solution of large
computational problems. A certificate and $2,000 are awarded for
outstanding contributions in the application of high performance
computers
using innovative approaches. The nomination form and submission
information is also provided at www.computer.org/awards.
The deadline
for submitting nominations for both the Cray
and Fernbach awards is July 31.
*** Gather Together at
Birds-of-a-Feather Sessions ***
Birds-of-a-Feather
(BOF) sessions give conference attendees
a chance to gather informally to discuss topics of mutual interest. The
conference provides meeting room space and posts daily schedules for
the BOFs,
which are open to all conference attendees. Those with ideas for BOFs
must
submit a title and short description (maximum 300 words) by July 26.
Submissions should be made via the submissions website at
www.sc-submissions.org.
*** MSI Program Deadline
Approaching ***
The deadline
for application submissions to the Minority
Serving Institutions program is Thursday, June 30. The program provides
grants
to help the SC conference reach minority audiences and to encourage
collaboration among MSI faculty and staff and scientists and
technologists at
major research institutions. To apply, go the submissions website at www.sc-submissions.org.
