SC2004 News - August Edition

Welcome to the August edition of SC2004 News, the official newsletter of the SC conference series. The newsletter is intended to give you brief, useful, and up-to-date information about SC2004.

SC2004, Bridging Communities, will be held November 6-12 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

*** LambdaRail’s Tom West to Present Keynote Address ***

Tom West, president and CEO of National LambdaRail, Inc. (NLR), will highlight the history and vision of NLR and how it is being initially used in his SC2004 keynote address. West’s talk kicks off the technical program on Tuesday, November 9. NLR is a national effort of members and associates from across the U.S. focused on implementing and operating a national network infrastructure to serve the needs of the advanced research community.  For more on Tom West and an abstract of his talk, go to www.sc-conference.org/sc2004/invited_speakers.php.

*** Advance Program Information Available Online ***

Information about the SC2004 program---including abstracts on papers, workshops, tutorials, Masterworks, speakers, panels, and SC Global---are online at this site.

This year’s program features 23 tutorials (full day and half day) presented over two days, 59 technical paper presentations, 16 Masterworks sessions and a variety of panel discussions, workshops, SC Global presentations, and Birds-of-a-Feather sessions. Online registration for technical program attendees and exhibitors is available at www.sc-conference.org/sc2004/registration.html.

*** Create Your Own Itinerary with the Interactive Scheduler ***

No need to miss any of the sessions or special events offered at SC2004. Just use the interactive scheduler, available at www.sc-conference.org/sc2004/schedule/index.php to create your personal itinerary. The schedule provides the latest, most comprehensive guide to the conference technical program and other activities. Once you’ve compiled your calendar, you can send it your laptop or email address or format it for your PDA.

*** Information at the Speed of Light?

Reaching for the Stars?  Not really, but InfoStar can give you information at the speed of light or at least at the speed of an Internet connection.  Wired or wireless, attendees can receive conference information at SC2004 when and where you need it.  No more shuffling through papers or programs to find the latest information about conference updates, program changes, or exhibitor demonstrations.  Interactive, informative, and professional, InfoStar will give attendees access to a wealth of information.

Join us at SC2004 and be a part of the new experience.  Bring your wireless devices (PDAs, Tablets, or laptops) and discover the world of SC at your fingertips.  For more about InfoStar visit the web site at www.ecu.edu/sc04.

*** Personal Video Room Keeps You Connected ***

Need to attend a staff meeting back at the office while you’re at SC2004 or get input from a far-away colleague before meeting with a vendor? Not to worry. The SC2004 Personal Video Room will be available so you can keep in touch while you’re out of town.

“E-mail alone is no longer enough to keep up with events back home while you’re on the road,” said Jackie Kern, SC Global vice chair. “In the past few years there has been an increasing demand for video conference services at the conference. In 2004, we will explore one way to meet those needs.”

The Personal Video Room will contain two Access Grid Personal Nodes and one set of H.323 video conference equipment, as a free service for registered attendees. Reservations for these resources will be submitted through a web interface. Like the email room, users will be responsible for knowing how to use the applications they require, and the room will be staffed by a knowledgeable operator.

“The Personal Video Room is a natural, and experimental, offshoot of SC Global,” Kern continued. “The SC Global program showcases advanced collaborative environments, and the Personal Video Room provides support for those who rely on them in their day-to-day work.”

*** Deadline Extended for Student Volunteer Applications ***

If you’re a student seeking to spend some time with leaders in high performance computing, networking, data analysis, storage, or visualization, don’t miss the chance to become an SC2004 student volunteer. Student volunteers---both graduates and undergraduates---work with conference speakers and organizers and perform valuable services for the conference. This year an effort is being made to pair student volunteers with professional mentors with similar interests. Student volunteers must fill out an application form by September 14, 2004, the extended deadline. An application form is available at www.sc-submissions.org . Send questions to students04@sc-conference.org .

*** Deadline Approaching for SC Global Satellite Sites ***

Tuesday, September 7, is the deadline for applications to participate as an SC Global Satellite Site. SC Global satellite sites will give audiences around the world the chance to participate in SC Global sessions through live interaction on the Access Grid. All sites must be running the Access Grid Toolkit and are encouraged to use version 2.2. Satellite sites must register by Sept. 7. A link to the satellite site registration page is available at < www.sc-conference.org/sc2004/scglobal.html >.
