Greetings and welcome to the 2003 edition of the SC
conference series official newsletter. If you are receiving
this newsletter, it is because you attended a previous
SC conference or requested information about SC2003.

SC2003, under the theme “Igniting Innovation,"
will be held Nov. 15-21 at the Phoenix Civic Plaza Convention
Center in Phoenix, AZ.
GET YOUR HANDS ON THE GRID IN EXPANDED SC20003 TUTORIALS
PROGRAM
When it comes to getting their hands on the Grid, SC2003
attendees just can’t get enough of it. Because
of the great demand in the session on “How to Build
a Grid Service Using the Globus Toolkit(R) 3” scheduled
for Monday, Nov. 17, an identical session has been added
to the Sunday, Nov. 16, schedule.
“Although Advance Registration is still open,
we looked at the strong demand for the tutorial in building
a Grid service and decided to add a second session,”
said SC2003 Tutorials Chair Harvey Wasserman of Los
Alamos National Laboratory. “This is a hands-on
tutorial and we wanted to give as many people as possible
an opportunity to gain expertise from experts in the
field.”
Seating is limited for each of the tutorials, which
are either half-day or full-day sessions, depending
on the topic. See the SC2003 Tutorials
Web page for a full list of tutorials. Information about
registration – either for a single session or a
one-day or two-day passport, is also posted on the Web.
FINAL REMINDER: ADVANCE REGISTRATION AND HOUSING
DEADLINES ARE FRIDAY, OCT. 10
Now is the time to stop procrastinating--the deadlines
for booking hotel rooms at the conference rate and for
advance conference registration at lower fees are both
Friday, Oct. 10.
Registering in advance for the Technical Program can
save up to $170 for ACM and IEEE members and $205 for
non-members. Those buying two-day Tutorials passports
can save $230 to $280. To qualify for the lower rates,
registration and payment must be received by 5 p.m.
(Eastern time) Friday, Oct. 10. You can find information
about types of registration and fees on the SC2003 registration
page.
Housing reservation can be made via the online reservation
system available from the SC2003 hotel reservations
web page. Only those reservations made by 4 p.m. (Mountain
time) Friday, Oct. 10 will qualify for the guaranteed
conference rate. Cancelled reservations are subject
to a cancellation fee. Cancellations made after 4 p.m.
(Mountain time) Monday, October 27, will be charged
the first night’s room and tax by the assigned

GETTING AROUND PHOENIX: HELP AND ADVICE IS READILY
AVAILABLE
Spending a week or more in an unfamiliar city poses
all kinds of questions, from finding convenient restaurants
to locating parking and the nearest ATM. While most
SC conference host cities strive to make attendees feel
welcome, Phoenix is exceptionally well organized in
this regard.
The Downtown Phoenix Partnership, a non-profit group
dedicated to revitalizing downtown Phoenix, offers help
to conference attendees through the Copper Square Ambassadors
(CSAs). CSAs are on duty seven days a week, 365 days
a year, and are happy to offer directions, answer questions,
or walk you to your destination within the downtown
area known as Copper Square. Look for CSAs in their
black and khaki uniforms on foot and on bicycle throughout
downtown Phoenix. Or, call the Ambassadors for more
information at 602-253-6394.
Downtown Area Shuttle (DASH). DASH is a free
shuttle bus service that operates throughout downtown
Phoenix and the state capitol area. At lunchtime, buses
operate every six to 10 minutes. Look for the DASH bus
stop signs throughout Copper Square and the state capitol
area.
Mobile Information Kiosk (MIK). The city of
Phoenix stations its Mobile Information Kiosk in areas
of high pedestrian traffic near major events, hotels
and conferences. The MIK provides information on events,
restaurant menus, and arts and cultural venues in Copper
Square. A member of the Copper Square Ambassadors is
located at the kiosk to answer questions, offer recommendations
and provide assistance to visitors. Look for the wooden
cart with giant wagon wheels and the black Copper Square
awning.
MAKE YOUR EXHIBITOR BADGE REQUESTS ONLINE
SC exhibitors should order their staff badges and guest
badges online.
Registration forms and passes are not available in hard
copy. Industry exhibitors receive five complimentary
badges per every 100 square feet of booth space and
one complimentary Technical Program registration. All
additional badges cost $100 each. Exhibits only badges
for clients are $80 each. Badges for research exhibitors
cost $100 each. Exhibits only badges for clients are
$80 each.
