Introduction
Welcome
to the June issue of the SC2002 newsletter, which you
are receiving based on your attendance at previous SC
conferences or because you have asked to be added to
the mailing list. We hope you find it useful, but if
not, please send an email to majordomo@ncsa.uiuc.edu
with the words "unsubscribe SC2002newsletter"
in the body of the email. The newsletter provides short
articles about the conference, upcoming dates and deadlines,
and program developments. You can also find the latest
information at .
SC2002, under the theme "From Terabytes to Insights,"
will be held Nov. 16-22 in Baltimore, MD.
Third Annual High-Performance Bandwidth Challenge
Now Seeking Teams Deadline to Sign Up is July
12
For the third year, the SC conference for high performance
networking and computing will be the site of the High
Performance Bandwidth Challenge, an annual competition
for leading-edge network applications developed by teams
of researchers from around the world. The competition
will take place live on the SC2002 show floor in Baltimore
using SCinet, the state-of-art, on-site network designed
and built especially for the annual SC conference. SCinet
will make available over 15 gigabits per second of wide
area network connectivity to the competitors.
The High Performance Bandwidth Challenge is sponsored
by Qwest Communications. Those planning to participate
in the challenge must submit a statement of intent by
July 12 and a full proposal by August 2. For more information
about this year's High Performance Bandwidth Challenge,
see http://scinet.supercomp.org/bwc/2002-first-announce.htm.
Housing
Website Now Open for SC2002 Hotel Reservations
The Website for booking hotel rooms at SC2002 is now
open for business. Go to the attendees section of the
website
and click on "housing." The site also provides
a map of the conference hotels around the Baltimore
Convention Center, a list of hotel amenities, and more
lodging information. You are encouraged to make your
hotel reservations as early as possible. The deadline
for housing reservations guaranteed at the conference
rate is Oct. 11.
Nominations
Sought for Seymour Cray and Sidney Fernbach Awards
There is still time to get your nominations in for these
prestigious awards honoring the memory of two great
high-performance computing pioneers. The awards are
sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and will be presented
at SC2002. The deadline to submit nominations for each
award is Wednesday, July 31. Here is more information
about each of the awards.
Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award:
The Seymour Cray Award is given to individuals whose
innovative contributions to high performance computing
systems best exemplify the creative spirit demonstrated
by Seymour Cray. The award consists of a crystal model,
certificate, and honorarium of $10,000.
The nomination form and submission information can be
found at http://hopper.computer.org/awards.nsf/cray/.
Sidney
Fernbach Memorial Award
This award was established in 1992 in memory of Sidney
Fernbach, one of the pioneers in the development and
application of high performance computers for the solution
of large computational problems. A certificate and $2,000
are awarded for outstanding contributions in the application
of high-performance computers using innovative approaches.
The nomination form and submission information can be
found at http://hopper.computer.org/awards.nsf/fernbach/.

Participating
in SC2002? Help Show the Colors
If your firm or organization is participating in SC2002,
why not let others know by posting the SC2002 logo on
your Website or using it in printed materials to be
distributed at the conference. You can find downloadable
logos in both high resolution (for use in print) and
lower resolution for Web displays in the news section
of the website under "logos." Go to .
Please remember that the logo is for noncommercial uses
only.
Exhibitors
Have More Time to Submit Proposals for Exhibitor Forum
New Submissions Due Date is Sept. 1
The SC conference offers industrial exhibitors an opportunity
to make presentations in the Exhibitor Forum. These
half-hour presentations give exhibitors a platform for
highlighting their latest technical achievements, R&D
breakthroughs and innovative products with an audience
that is eager to learn more. Time slots for these talks,
which often draw standing-room-only crowds, are available
on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve a spot
on the schedule go to http://www.nacse.org/cgi-bin/sc02forumsub.pl.
Applications must be submitted by Sunday, Sept. 1. Selection
and notification will be made by Sept. 30.
HPC Challenge Information Announced
The HPC Challenge awards give SC participants the chance
to showcase important applications and platforms. The
awards, presented at the conference, will honor participants
in three categories for innovative uses of high performance
computing resources. Categories are:
*Most Innovative Data-Intensive Application:
This award will be presented to the most innovative
entry in the area of data mining, visualization, or
combinations of the two.
*Most Geographically Distributed Application:
This award will be presented to the team with the most
geographically distributed application that solves a
non-trivial problem.
*Most Heterogeneous Set of Platforms: Similar
to the distributed application award, this will honor
the most diverse set of architectures used to solve
a single, non-trivial application.
The HPC Challenge includes three award levels: Platinum
($1,500 honorarium), Gold ($1,000), and Silver ($500).
