Welcome
to the May issue of the SC2002 newsletter. You are on the mailing list
for this monthly newsletter based on your attendance at previous SC conferences

SC2002, under the theme "From Terabytes to Insights," will be
held Nov. 16-22 in Baltimore, Md.
Nominations
Sought for Seymour Cray and Sidney Fernback Awards
These prestigious awards honoring the memory of two great high-performance
computing pioneers are awarded by the IEEE Computer Society. The awards
will be presented at SC2002. The deadline to submit nominations for each
award is Wednesday, July 31. Here is more information about each of the
awards.
Seymour Cray Computer
Engineering Award
The Seymour Cray Award is given to individuals whose innovative contributions
to high performance computing systems best exemplify the creative spirit
demonstrated by Seymour Cray. The award consists of a crystal model, certificate,
and honorarium of $10,000.

Sidney Fernbach
Memorial Award
This award was established in 1992 in memory of Sidney Fernbach, one of
the pioneers in the development and application of high-performance computers
for the solution of large computational problems. A certificate and $2,000
are awarded for outstanding contributions in the application of high-performance
computers using innovative approaches
.

SC2002 Exhibition
Floor Plan Shaping Up
An updated floor plan for the SC2002 exhibit space at the Baltimore Convention
Center is now on the Web. The updated layout shows booth sizes and locations
for both the Research and Industry Exhibits. It does not include booth
assignments. The floor plan can be found in the exhibits section of the
web site exhibit_floor.html.
New Research Exhibits
Communications Posted
The SC2002 Research Exhibits Committee has posted two new communications
on the web site The first deals with what to expect as a research exhibitor;
the second offers guidelines for planning your booth. The information
is available at exhibit_comm.html.
SC2002 Student Days Program to Introduce Students to HPC
This year's SC2002 Conference will offer two days dedicated to students,
with more than 60 undergraduate and graduate students participating in
the SC2002 Student Days Program on Wednesday, Nov. 20, and Thursday, Nov.
21. Registration is now open.
The SC2002 Education Committee added Students Days to its education program
to give students a firsthand opportunity to hear about high performance
computing and opportunities within the field. The students will meet with
educators, researchers, administrators, and potential employers. For more

Education Program
Deadline Extended to Thursday, May 30
In order to give interested teachers more time to establish teams to participate
in the SC2002 Education Program, the application deadline has been extended
to May 30. The Education Program gives teams of teachers from around the
country a hands-on opportunity to learn about computational science and
how to integrate it into the classroom. For information on how to apply,

Student Volunteers
Sought
Undergraduate and graduate student volunteers are needed for SC2002. A
student volunteer helps with the administration of the conference in exchange
for free conference registration, housing, most meals, conference goodies,
and more. The conference asks for a total of 20-25 hours of work. The
application deadline for student volunteers has been extended to Sept.
