Introduction
Welcome to the second issue of the SC2002 newsletter. This monthly newsletter
is being sent to attendees of previous SC conferences and we hope you
find it useful. If not, please send an email to majordomo@ncsa.uiuc.edu
with the words "unsubscribe SC2002newsletter" in the body of
the email. New subscribers should send email to majordomo@ncsa.uiuc.edu
with the words "subscribe SC2002newsletter" in the body of the
email. The newsletter will be sent out each month, providing short articles
about the conference, upcoming dates and program developments. You can
also find the latest information at (click on "news releases").
SC2002, under the theme "From Terabytes to Insights," will be
held Nov. 16-22 in Baltimore, MD.
One
Week Left to Submit Technical Papers, Tutorials, Gordon Bell Prize Entries,
Panels and Workshops -- Due Date is Friday, April 26
Submissions are now being accepted for Gordon Bell Prize nominations,
Panels, Technical Papers (extended abstracts), Tutorials and Workshops.
More information about all submission categories can be found by going
to and clicking on the areas of interest. The submission deadline is Friday,
April 26, unless otherwise stated.
Last
Call: Requests for Research Exhibit Space, Networking Connections Due
Friday, April 26
The website for requesting research exhibit booth space at SC2002 is now
open at (click on "research"). The Research Exhibits website
also provides information on submitting requests for networking, space,
and special requirements, such as co-location near other research or industry
exhibits. A Research Exhibits Calendar shows important deadlines and a
section called "Important Research Exhibit Communications" archives
all communications sent out to prospective research exhibitors.
This
year, the research exhibits area will include a new feature, called Academic
Village. This area will be geared to small, first-time research exhibitors.
A special emphasis will be made to attract Minority Serving Institutions
to Academic Village. Selection of space for the large research exhibits
is expected to begin in May. For more information about research exhibits,
contact the committee at: sc02_research_exhibits_committee@ornl.gov
Nominations
Sought for IEEE Computer Society Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award
and the Sidney Fernbach Award
The Seymour Cray Award is presented annually to acknowledge an individual's
work that has had a profound impact on high performance computing. To
be considered for this award, the individual's contribution must have
had a major impact on the supercomputing industry. A crystal memento,
certificate, and $10,000 honorarium are awarded to the person or persons
whose innovative contributions to high performance computing best exemplify
the creative spirit demonstrated by Seymour Cray. Previous recipients
of the Cray Award, established in 1998 by the IEEE Computer Society Board
of Governors, include Glen Culler and John L. Hennessy. Nomination forms
are available at:.
The Sidney Fernbach Award is presented annually to an individual for "an
outstanding contribution in the application of high performance computers
using innovative approaches." The award was established in 1992 by
the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors in memory of the late Sidney
Fernbach, one of the pioneers in the development and application of high
performance computers for the solution of large computational problems.
The award consists of a certificate and a $2,000 honorarium. Previous
recipients include David H. Bailey and Paul Woodward. Nomination forms
are available at: . The submission deadline for both awards is
Wednesday, July 31, 2002. For questions or assistance with submissions,
please contact Lynne Harris at l.harris@computer.org.
Education Program Applications Deadline Extended to May 30
Teachers and undergraduate faculty interested in learning about computational
science and how to integrate it into the classroom are invited to participate
in the SC2002 Education Program. The program seeks multidisciplinary teams
of undergraduate faculty or K-12 teachers and undergraduate faculty. The
deadline to apply for the Education Program has been extended to Thursday,
May 30, 2002, to give people more time to form teams and apply for the
program. For information on how to apply, go to.
Undergraduate and K-12 educators participate in the conference through
the Education Program and by attending the exhibits, plenary sessions,
and special programs offered to all conference attendees. Furthermore,
the SC conference Education Program continues throughout the year through
regional workshops and additional activities to keep educators urrent
with new developments in the use of computing techniques in the classroom.
The Education Program portion of the SC2002 conference runs from Saturday,
Nov. 16, through Tuesday, Nov. 19, although participants are encouraged
to stay for the remainder of the week to participate in the full range
of conference offerings. Support for travel and housing expenses will
be provided to accepted applicants, pending funding.
Conference Looking For Student Volunteers
Undergraduate and graduate student volunteers are needed for SC2002. Student
volunteers help with the administration of the conference in exchange
for free conference registration, housing, most meals, conference goodies,
and more. The volunteers interact with conference organizers and presenters
and meet other students from all over the world. It is an opportunity
to learn about the latest high-performance networking and computing technology
and meet leading researchers from around the world. And, it looks good
on a resume.
This year's student volunteers will be encouraged to participate in Student
Days, a new program to help students succeed in graduate school and provide
them with information about career opportunities in education, research,
and industry. Information on student volunteer opportunities, including
a registration form, is available in the Student Volunteers section of
the SC2002 website (go to and look under "Attendees"). Information
on Student Days is available in the Education section of the website.
The deadline for applications is July 29.
