Hostnames and DNS

SCinet will provide DNS (Domain Name Service) for all hosts at Supercomputing '96. This includes operating several nameservers as well as assigning hostnames for each assigned IP address. It will also be possible to request custom hostnames for booths. Fees are associated with some host names.

SCinet Nameservers

SCinet will operate one primary and multiple secondary nameservers for the pgh.supercomp.org domain. At least one of the nameservers will be off-site to allow addresses to be resolved before and after the Supercomputing show. Each booth will receive a list of nameservers to be used in resolv.conf files. SCinet will not delegate any subdomains under the pgh.supercomp.org domain.

Assigned Hostnames

By default, a hostname will be of the form b<i>-h<j>-<k>.pgh.supercomp.org, where <i> is the booth number, <j> the ordinal number of the host and <k> the subnet on which the interface is attached. An example might be b10-h8-37.pgh.supercomp.org. This is the eighth host on subnet 37 for booth ten. The idea behind this scheme is to facilitate problem tracking.

Custom Hostnames

This year, both industry and research booths will be eligible, for a fee, to apply for "custom" hostnames. These names are within subdomains of pgh.supercomp.org (note, however, that these subdomains remain fully under the control of SCinet and are not delegated to the booths). A booth will request a subdomain and provide a list of names for each requested host. These custom names will be the primary names for the booth's IP addresses. In this case, the standard SCinet hostnames will exist as CNAMEs. Examples of custom hostnames might be alpha.bigcorp.pgh.supercomp.org and beta.bigcorp.pgh.supercomp.org. An organization is free to have a forward resolution such as alpha.bigcorp.org and beta.bigcorp.org for these hosts. However, SCinet will not provide reverse resolution for the latter names.

Hostname Fees

There is no additional charge for standard hostnames as assigned by SCinet. Each custom subdomain will incur a charge of $500. This fee includes names for up to ten IP addresses. Names for additional addresses are $25 each.
